KuCoin 5.0 Brings Equity Markets, Unified Margin and an AI Assistant Into One App

Almost every crypto exchange in the world tells you whether a price went up or down in red and green, the two colors that roughly 1 in 12 men find hard to tell apart. KuCoin has now changed that on its own platform. The fix is one of the more telling details in KuCoin 5.0, the overhaul of its exchange that went live on 9 October. Alongside a color vision mode, the upgrade brings spot, margin and futures into one account, puts an AI assistant called Kia across the whole app and opens equity-linked markets in four countries to traders who never sleep.

KuCoin describes 5.0 as the product side of its "Trust, Built-in" campaign. The scope is unusually wide for a single release. Six parts of the platform change at once (compliance, technology, assets, experience, AI and wealth management), all landing on an exchange that now counts more than 45 million users across more than 200 countries and regions. Taken together, the changes read less like a feature drop and more like KuCoin rebuilding its app around how people actually trade in 2026.

KuCoin 5.0 at a glance: six upgrade pillars across markets, technology, trading, AI, wealth and trust, launched on 9 October 2026 for a platform of more than 45 million users

What Launched

On markets, KuCoin is adding four equity-referenced markets covering the US, South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan, along with perpetual contracts that trade around the clock. The app itself has been rebuilt on unified React Native components, with a redesigned Profile Center 2.0, a stronger sub-account system and real-time peer-to-peer messaging. Trading splits into a Lite Mode for beginners and a Pro Mode for experienced traders, with the new Unified Trading Account available to VIP1+ users, while Kia now sits across every part of the platform. Wealth tools add VIP-only Earn products, Earn for sub-accounts and the option to post KCUSD as margin, all resting on third-party audited Proof of Reserves and a set of SOC 2 and ISO certifications.

One Account for Spot, Margin and Futures

The Unified Trading Account is the upgrade serious traders will feel first. It brings spot, margin and futures into one shared framework for funds, margin and risk management, arriving at a time when derivatives dominate crypto trading. Futures and other derivatives accounted for about $14.6 trillion of the $17.9 trillion traded across 20 major exchanges in the first quarter of 2026, according to TokenInsight data, while CoinDesk Research put the derivatives share of all exchange volume at 76.5% in March, its highest reading since September 2023.

Derivatives made up $14.6tn of the $17.9tn traded across 20 centralized exchanges in Q1 2026, about 82% of the total, with derivatives at 76.5% of all exchange volume in March 2026.

That shift explains why separate wallets have become a real cost. Picture a trader with $10,000 on an exchange, spread across a $4,000 spot wallet and $3,000 each in margin and futures. Without a transfer, the most that trader can put behind a new futures position is $3,000. Inside a unified account the full $10,000 can back the same position, subject to the account's risk rules. KCUSD counts as margin too, so money sitting in wealth products no longer has to be pulled out every time a trade needs collateral. It is the most practical change in the release, with one catch worth knowing: for now it is limited to eligible users at VIP1 and above.

In an illustrative example, a trader with $10,000 split across separate wallets can back a futures position with $3,000 without a transfer, compared with the full $10,000 in a unified account.

A Color Vision Mode for 360 Million People

KuCoin estimates that around 360 million people worldwide have some difficulty telling colors apart. The most common form is deuteranomaly, a weaker response to green light that affects about 5% of men, while overall roughly 8% of men and 0.5% of women of Northern European ancestry have some degree of color vision deficiency. On a standard candlestick chart the effect is stark, because the green and red that separate rising and falling prices fade into two nearly identical shades of olive.

KuCoin 5.0's new mode swaps the colors on charts and other visual information so that up and down stay distinct for people with different types of color vision. It costs the user a single toggle, it solves a problem the industry has largely treated as someone else's. It is also the feature most likely to be copied by rivals.

Kia Follows You Across the App

AI Assistant 5.x, branded Kia, replaces the idea of a help chatbot with a single entry point for questions, conversations and tasks across market insights, Earn, trading, customer support and campaigns. Its main trick is context. Kia reads the page a user is on and the actions they have just taken, so it can recommend a relevant service or finish a job without the user explaining where they are in the app.

There is already demand behind it. Daily active users of KuCoin's AI assistant grew by 300% in the first half of 2026 across eight core scenarios, before the 5.0 upgrade arrived. Building Kia around getting things done rather than open-ended chat is the right instinct for an exchange, where a saved minute matters more than a clever answer.

Kia connects market insights, Earn, trading, customer support and campaigns through one assistant that reads page context, while daily active users of KuCoin's AI assistant grew 300% in H1 2026.

Lite Mode for Beginners, Pro Mode for Traders

The app now offers two front doors. Lite Mode keeps beginners on a calm home screen with assets, Convert and Earn up front, while Pro Mode brings spot, futures, margin, Earn, Convert and copy trading into one workspace. The split matters more than it might seem, because KuCoin's growth is increasingly coming from first-time users in new markets, with new-user numbers up 170% in Latin America and 30% in Africa in the first half of 2026. Those users should not have to start on the same crowded screen a professional futures trader uses.

Lite Mode puts assets, Convert and Earn up front for beginners, while Pro Mode brings spot, futures, margin, Earn, Convert and copy trading together for experienced traders.

Equity-Linked Markets Around the Clock

KuCoin 5.0 also stretches beyond crypto, adding equity-referenced markets for the US, South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan across AI, semiconductor, technology and finance names, with leverage of up to 30x. Traders can pull up five years of price history and major news for the underlying stocks, go long or short and trade perpetuals around the clock, including in pre-market and after-hours sessions when the underlying exchanges are shut.

KuCoin 5.0 adds four equity-referenced markets with 24/7 perpetuals, up to 30x leverage and five years of history, as the distributed value of tokenized stocks rose from about $2m in June 2025 to roughly $2.5bn in August 2026.

The timing is good. The value of tokenized stocks on public blockchains grew from about $2 million in June 2025 to roughly $2.5 billion by mid-August 2026, according to rwa.xyz data, while perpetual contracts tied to real-world assets set a volume record of $311 billion in June 2026. Leverage of up to 30x magnifies moves in both directions, so these markets are best suited to experienced traders working in Pro Mode.

Wealth, Sub-Accounts and the Everyday App

Several quieter changes round out the release. VIP users get exclusive Earn products, sub-accounts can now take part in Earn with their funds kept separate from the main account, while KCUSD can serve as margin inside the unified account. Teams running several strategies get a sub-account system that creates accounts in bulk, manages phone numbers, emails, Google Authenticator settings and passwords centrally and records custody actions in a full audit trail. Everyday screens have been refreshed as well, as Profile Center 2.0 moves to a card-based layout, K-line chart settings sync across devices and a new messaging system supports real-time peer-to-peer chat.

Trust and Scale

The foundation under all of this is a platform that has grown from 5 million users in late 2018 to more than 30 million in September 2023, 40 million in April 2025 and more than 45 million today. KuCoin publishes Proof of Reserves audited by a third party, holds SOC 2 Type II, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, ISO/IEC 27701:2019, ISO 22301:2019 and ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certifications, while adding registration with Australia's AUSTRAC and a MiCA licence in Europe.

KuCoin's registered users grew from 5 million in late 2018 to more than 45 million in 2026, backed by five security and resilience certifications, AUSTRAC registration, a MiCA licence and third-party audited Proof of Reserves.

BC Wong, chief executive of KuCoin, frames trust as something users should feel in every interaction, not only in how their assets are protected but in how clearly, reliably and efficiently the platform works. In his telling, 5.0 is where that long-term commitment moves into the product itself, giving users more confidence and control today while laying the groundwork for the next stage of digital finance.

Our Take

HackerNoon's rating of each KuCoin 5.0 pillar out of 10, from 9.5 for the color vision accessibility mode to 8 for Earn and wealth tools, for an overall score of 8.7.

KuCoin 5.0 is a broad, carefully judged upgrade rather than a single headline feature, earning 8.7 out of 10 on HackerNoon's rating of its six pillars. Active and VIP traders gain the most through the Unified Trading Account and round-the-clock access to equity-linked markets. Newcomers get a gentler start in Lite Mode, while everyone gets an assistant that knows where they are in the app. The color vision mode is the part that will last longest in the memory, because it shows that building trust into a product can begin with something as simple as making sure every trader can read the chart in front of them.
